French healthcare staff who refused Covid jab allowed back to work

“The obligation to be vaccinated against Covid-19, as laid down in article 12 of 5 August 2021, is suspended,” reads the decree published in the Official Journal on Saturday night.

From Monday their employers must offer to reintegrate them as soon as possible.

The suspension of unvaccinated healthcare workers and caregivers has impacted 2.7 million people since August 2021 – those in direct contact with patients, such as care workers, nurses, doctors, ambulance drives, home helps, firefighters – but also admin workers in health structures.

Around 3,000 people refused the jab and were suspended.

According to figures garnered from the Ministry of Health, this represented only 0.3 percent of hospital workers and a similar proportion of the self-employed.

However, the health branch of the hardline CGT union gave a higher figure, at between 20,000 to 40,000.

Suspension only

The decision to lift the vaccine obligation followed a recommendation by France’s health advisory body (HAS).

In a statement published on 30 March, it advised that vaccination against Covid-19 be “strongly recommended” rather than imposed.

The HAS also underlined that “lifting a vaccination obligation for professionals does not call into question the benefits of vaccination”.

Some health professionals criticised the HAS stance on the grounds vaccine-scepticism had no place in the medical profession.

But those refusing Covid jabs also invoked the right to bodily autonomy and freedom of choice.

Legally speaking the government has only supended the obligation and could reinstate it if the pandemic returns, without the need for a parliamentary vote.

A draft bill proposed by the Communist Party to repeal compulsory Covid vaccination, and which would ban any return to suspending health workers, was adopted by France’s lower house on 4 May.

The bill still has to be examined by the Senate but the government is opposed to any such repeal.

3 years ago : A deluge of death in northern Italy

Coronavirus deaths in the Lombardy region have surpassed those in China’s Hubei province, the original epicentre of the outbreak. Funeral homes and crematoria are being overwhelmed.

Lombardy, the wealthiest and most populous region in Italy, reported its first case of coronavirus on Feb. 21 a short distance from Milan — Italy’s financial capital. A month later, Lombardy had become the single deadliest coronavirus hotspot on the planet. On March 22, the number of deaths there reached 3,456, eclipsing the number of people who have died from the virus in Hubei – the Chinese province where the virus first emerged at the end of 2019.

After Lombardy detected its first case, others soon came to light. The government moved quickly to seal off a cluster of 10 towns at the epicentre of the outbreak, hoping the lockdown would contain the flare-up. It didn’t. The disease spread rapidly to nearby communities. By March 24, Lombardy had recorded 4,178 deaths, 61% of the national tally, while the number of confirmed cases totalled 30,703 — 44% of all known infections in Italy. By contrast, all of China had registered 3,277 deaths by March 23.

By March 23, some 1,176 people had died in Bergamo province, the vast majority elderly pensioners. However, city mayor Giorgio Gori has estimated that the real number of victims could be four times higher, with many people dying at home or in care homes, where they were not tested for coronavirus.

As the death toll mounted, alarm bells rapidly started to sound in other towns, notably nearby Brescia, Lombardy’s second largest city, which had 799 registered deaths as of March 23.

China Covid: More than 88 million people in Henan infected, official says

Provincial official Kan Quancheng revealed the figure – amounting to about 88.5 million people – at a press conference.

China is battling an unprecedented surge in cases after abandoning zero-Covid policies in December.

The move followed rare protests against lockdowns, quarantines and mass tests.

Mr Kan did not specify a timeline for when all the infections happened – but as China’s previous zero-Covid policy kept cases to a minimum, it’s likely the vast majority of Henan’s infections occurred in the past few weeks.

He said visits to fever clinics in Henan province peaked on 19 December “after which it showed a continuous downward trend”.

The Henan provincial figures are in stark contrast to Covid figures from the central government

According to official data, just 120,000 people in the country of 1.4 billion have been infected and 30 died since the shift in Covid policy.

Meanwhile on Sunday, authorities reported three Covid deaths in mainland China, one more than the day before.

However, with the definition of Covid deaths narrowed and mass testing no longer compulsory, government data is no longer reflective of the true scale of the outbreak.

Infections are expected to soar as the country celebrates Lunar New Year later this month, with millions expected to travel from big cities to visit older relatives in the countryside.

Overall, more than two billion individual journeys are expected to take place, officials have said.

Covid Pfizer jab: court case claiming side effects begins in France

A lawyer wants to prove his client’s arthritis is linked to the jab. He says he has up to 300 clients with similar claims.

A French lawyer launched a bid to prove his client’s ‘totally incapacitating’ illness came on as a result of taking the Pfizer Covid vaccine.

Marseille avocat Eric Lanzarone, who says he has around 300 similar clients on his books, is bringing a case against both Pfizer, the American company which makes and markets the vaccine, and BioNTech, the German laboratory which developed it.

A hearing was held before Marseille’s civil court yesterday, to bring the case of one of the clients, a 55-year-old woman who is remaining anonymous.

He wants her symptoms to be acknowledged as side effects of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine.

Mr Lanzarone said she developed rheumatoid arthritis a few days after her second dose of the Pfizer vaccine.

“Today, she can no longer walk for more than 500m without stopping and has been on sick leave from work since. This is a totally incapacitating, disabling side effect.”

Mr Lanzarone says among his many clients with similar claims he has seen such issues as vision problems, endometriosis, and myocarditis (heart problems).

In its defence, US pharmaceutical giant Pfizer put forward a team of lawyers, led by Capucine Van Robays, also from Marseille.

Lawyer wants a medical expert to be designated by court

In order to prove a link between the vaccination and his client’s illness, Mr Lanzarone wants a medical expert to be designated by the court to determine cause and effect.

If the link is proven, he will undertake a further court process to seek compensation.

Yesterday saw arguments between the two parties as to what sort of expert should be designated.

Mr Lanzarone stated an immunologist or a specialist in internal medicine was required to fully prove the link, whereas Pfizer and BioNTech suggested a rheumatologist. Mr Lanzarone believes the latter would only take note of his client’s current condition, not the way it arose.

The judge is set to decide with a further hearing now due on February 13.

Meanwhile the alleged victim asked for a €5,000 payment now to be offset against her future compensation. The companies’ lawyers said this was inappropriate as nothing had been proved.

One of the lawyers for Pfizer, Sylvie Gallage-Alwis, said: “Most of the time polyarthritis is a genetic illness and there is a long list of causes of this illness.”

Mr Lanzarone says he is not ‘anti-Vax’

Mr Lanzarone has stated he is not ‘anti-vax’, but that he was called upon by a number of people to represent them after publicity over his attempts last year to contest a contract signed between Pfizer and the European Commission when the vaccine was ordered.

He claims the contract, whose full details have officially been kept confidential but which he says he has had sight of when it was briefly released on the internet, requires Pfizer to be compensated by the French state in the case of them incurring legal costs and penalties related to side effects from having the jabs.

Mr Lanzarone said: “It’s about privatising profits, but making the state responsible for the risks. I don’t think it should be up to taxpayers in France to pay out for side effects.”

The case in Marseille also follows an ongoing one started last year on behalf of a parisian woman with heart problems that she also says developed after being vaccinated. In that case Mr Lanzarone sued only Pfizer and not BioNTech.

Health dictatorship in China

Recent demonstrations in China have been “Covid protests.” But the protests are not simply about stringent Covid-19 policies. Though triggered by ongoing lockdowns, the protests have a much broader aim of ending authoritarian rule and lack of freedom of expression. And so, criticism of draconian Covid-19 measures is a channel to express wider dissatisfaction with the government’s authoritarian modes of domestic governance and surveillance.

Nevertheless, it’s highly unlikely the Beijing government will completely give up on its Zero Covid policy. Authorities are aware that letting go of all rules at once could lead to an out-of-control Covid-19 wave with potentially catastrophic results, particularly in the context of current vaccination levels among the elderly, who are the most vulnerable to severe disease. Approximately a third of the over 80 population are unvaccinated.

And it’s a safe bet that the Chinese government will do everything in its power to maintain its authoritarian rule, not only with respect to containing Covid-19 but also other aspects of Chinese life. There’s already evidence of this, as a very heavy police presence has been mobilized in China’s major cities. The Chinese security apparatus is using various tactics of intimidation, including checking people’s cell phones and stopping would-be protesters from marching in the streets. Thus far, this appears to have quelled further protests after the weekend. The Communist Party’s Central Political and Legal Affairs Commission defended the stern measures, saying that it was “necessary to crack down on infiltration and sabotage activities by hostile forces in accordance with the law.”

Christian Perronne

A French physician Doctor Christian Perronne has won a victory against charges that he denigrated official covid policies, with the French Order of Physicians holding that he was in fact obliged to speak out.

In its ruling, the French governing body for doctors found that Christian Perronne, 67, acted in the best interest of citizens and his profession in critiquing covid treatments and vaccines on social media, in national television interviews, and in a book entitled: entitled Is there a mistake THEY didn’t make?: COVID-19: the sacred union of incompetence and arrogance.

The book, and statements Perronne made in a whirlwind of media interviews, soon got him into trouble with French medical authorities.

The tribunal’s finding did not specifically endorse Perronne’s views, but rather his right to speak them.

Millions in China’s Chengdu thrown into extended COVID lockdown

The Chinese city of Chengdu extended a lockdown for a majority of its more than 21 million residents on Thursday to prevent further transmission of COVID-19 while millions more in other parts of China were told to shun travel in upcoming holidays.

Chengdu, the capital of southwestern China’s Sichuan province, was locked down on Sept. 1 after COVID cases were detected, becoming the largest Chinese metropolis hit with curbs since Shanghai’s lockdown in April and May.

Partygate: pictures emerge showing Boris Johnson drinking at No 10 leaving do during lockdown

The images, revealed by ITV News, were apparently taken at a get-together to mark the departure of Lee Cain, who was the Downing Street director of communications, on November 13, 2020.

Covid rules at the time banned parties with people outside of your household.

Eight days earlier, England was placed under another strict lockdown as cases of the virus soared.

The pictures also leave the prime minister open to accusations that he misled parliament.

On December 8 last year, Labour MP Catherine West asked him: “Will the prime minister tell the house whether there was a party in Downing Street on 13 November?”

Johnson replied: “No, but I am sure that whatever happened, the guidance was followed and the rules were followed at all times.”

Corona : the fifth wave

Due to the rapid increase in infection in the last 14 days, a fifth wave of corona is being feared in South Africa. South Africa’s Health Minister Joe Phaahla has told Reuters that given the rapid increase in cases in the country, it is that the fifth wave of corona virus (Covid 5th) is earlier than expected. South Africa has the highest number of deaths due to corona in Africa. There have been more than 3.7 million confirmed cases and over 100,000 deaths during the pandemic.

Herd immunity and Covid 19

In the months following the emergence of SARS-CoV-2, “herd immunity” was frequently cited as the long-term destination of the COVID-19 pandemic. As vaccination has rolled out, variants have emerged, and as cases surge once again, we are learning more about the nuances of SARS-CoV-2 infection and what short- and long-term immunity to this virus may look like. With this changing perspective, how should we be thinking about herd immunity?

Shanghai lockdown

Shanghai: Residents ‘running out of food’ in Covid lockdown

Residents are confined to their homes, banned from leaving for even essential reasons such as grocery shopping.

Public anger is also being stoked by other drastic measures – such as the removal of children from their parents if they test positive.

Shanghai officials later responded by allowing parents who were also infected to accompany their children to isolation centres.

The country has successfully enacted full lockdowns before – endured by millions of people in cities including Xi’an and Wuhan – but Shanghai is its biggest city and the case spread this time is much higher than previous outbreaks.

As one of the economic powerhouses of China, Shanghai’s shutdown is also fuelling concerns about the impact to China and the world’s economy.

Hong Kong’s Covid-19 death rate is now the highest in the world, after fatalities among the city’s under-vaccinated elderly surged and concerns mount there may be more to come as infections spread through care facilities.

The financial hub’s seven-day rolling average rose to 27 deaths per 1 million people as of Sunday. That’s double Latvia, which has the second-highest rate, and far surpasses the peak of the U.S.’s omicron wave.

Devastated Tonga after volcanic eruption, tsunami

After a powerful undersea volcanic eruption near the island nation of Tonga, early reports gave an indication of the expanse of its destruction. Tonga, an archipelago in the Pacific Ocean, is just 40 miles from the volcano, and just over 1,000 miles off the coast of New Zealand.

The eruption blanketed the country with ash and produced tsunami waves up to 50 feet high.

Novak Djokovic is refused entry into Australia over vaccine exemption

Australians have reacted angrily to news that tennis player Novak Djokovic will play in the Australian Open, after being exempted from vaccination rules.

All players and staff at the tournament must be vaccinated or have an exemption granted by an expert independent panel.

Djokovic has not spoken about his vaccination status, but last year said he was “opposed to vaccination”.

Having landed in Melbourne, the 20-time grand slam winner was reportedly attempting to enter the country on a visa that does not permit medical exemptions for being unvaccinated, and when Border Force contacted government officials in Victoria to sponsor the visa, they refused to do so.

Novak Djokovic is awaiting his Australian Open fate in a Melbourne immigration hotel as the world No 1 mounts a legal challenge against Australia’s a decision to cancel his visa

Prime Minister Scott Morrison said if the player’s evidence was insufficient he would be on the “next plane home”.

Covid : fifth wave and new variant

The B.1.1.529 – Omicron- variant was first reported to WHO from South Africa on 24 November 2021. The epidemiological situation in South Africa has been characterized by three distinct peaks in reported cases, the latest of which was predominantly the Delta variant. In recent weeks, infections have increased steeply, coinciding with the detection of B.1.1.529 variant. The first known confirmed B.1.1.529 infection was from a specimen collected on 9 November 2021.

This variant has a large number of mutations, some of which are concerning. Preliminary evidence suggests an increased risk of reinfection with this variant, as compared to other VOCs. The number of cases of this variant appears to be increasing in almost all provinces in South Africa. Current SARS-CoV-2 PCR diagnostics continue to detect this variant. Several labs have indicated that for one widely used PCR test, one of the three target genes is not detected (called S gene dropout or S gene target failure) and this test can therefore be used as marker for this variant, pending sequencing confirmation. Using this approach, this variant has been detected at faster rates than previous surges in infection, suggesting that this variant may have a growth advantage

Chinese journalist jailed over Covid reporting is ‘close to death’, family say

A citizen journalist jailed for her coverage of China’s initial response to Covid in Wuhan is close to death after going on hunger strike, her family said, prompting renewed calls from rights groups for her immediate release.

Zhang Zhan, 38, a former lawyer, travelled to Wuhan in February 2020 to report on the chaos at the pandemic’s epicentre, questioning authorities’ handling of the outbreak in her smartphone videos.

She is now severely underweight and “may not live for much longer”, her brother Zhang Ju wrote last week on a Twitter account verified by people close to the matter.

France : Mandatory vaccination, Covid-19 pass and access to PCR tests

Demonstrators in France protested the announcement of mandatory vaccinations for health workers and the implementation of a health pass restricting access to public places for the unvaccinated.

The new restrictions announced by President Emmanuel Macron earlier this week have divided the French, with large demonstrations taking place in Paris, Nantes, Annecy, Montpellier, Strasbourg, Perpignan and other cities.

Macron also declared Monday that France will start charging money for some virus tests, which up to now have all been free for anyone on French territory.

The delta variant is driving France’s virus infections back up again, just as the country kicked off summer vacation season after a long-awaited reopening. Some 40 percent of France’s population is fully inoculated.

The link between e-Learning and economic development during the pandemic

Studies reveal that eLearning is experiencing an all-time increase in business opportunities. Now that eLearning has become the new normal, many people prefer learning online. UNESCO claimed that school closures affected up to 1.6 billion students in around 194 countries.

This trend has opened up business opportunities for content and technology support providers in the training and education sector. In addition, many educational institutions have shifted towards technology-based learning. This has increased the demand for Learning Management Systems, support, technology management, and eLearning content creation.

Indian states run out of COVID jabs amid record infections

Workers construct new platforms to cremate bodies outside a crematorium in New Delhi

Several states in India have run out of vaccines against COVID-19, exacerbating a dire second wave of infections that has left hospitals and morgues overflowing while families scramble for increasingly scarce medicines and oxygen

Hundreds of people were seen queuing to be vaccinated across Ahmedabad, the main commercial city in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s home state of Gujarat.

Despite the warning, scientists said the federal government did not seek to impose major restrictions to contain the spread of the virus. Millions, largely unmasked, attended religious gatherings and election rallies that were held by Modi, leaders of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party and opposition politicians.

Australian officials said residents and citizens who have been in India within 14 days of the date they plan to return home will be banned from entering Australia as of Monday, and those who disobey will face fines and jail.

Israel’s coronavirus vaccination strategy

The coronavirus vaccination campaign has been a main theme in Netanyahu’s electoral campaign in an effort by the Israeli premier to preserve his seat in the upcoming elections.

Seeking to regain voter support in the upcoming polls, Netanyahu has given a strong message in his election campaign that Israel is “successful” in its fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

To date, Israel has administered the most COVID-19 vaccine doses per capita in the world.

More than half of the population have received the first dose of the coronavirus vaccine since the vaccination campaign began on Dec. 20.

Some 40% of the country’s population have already received the second dose.

Most of the COVID-19 restrictions were removed in the country thanks to the rapid progress in vaccination.

Local democracy and Covid

Local self-government outlines the right and the ability of local
authorities, within the limits of the law, to regulate and manage a
substantial share of public affairs. In a local democracy this right is

France to speed up Covid-19 vaccination campaign

France is the only European country where written consent is required before receiving the vaccination.

Health officials said France is setting out for “a marathon, not a sprint” and that they are going slowly, in part, because of high levels of public scepticism about the vaccine.

How is the Covid crisis changing our reading habits

Tony Mortimer on discovering reading – as a 50-year-old

How is the crisis changing our reading habits and accelerating the industry’s digital revolution?

Covid-19 has proved an accelerant :

  • An increase in reading
  • Diversification of means
  • A younger digital reading demographic

“In the next three to six months we might get to where we might have got in a few years,” says Stephen Page, chief executive of Faber, one of London’s leading independent publishers.

France targets January for Covid-19 vaccination campaign launch

The growing vaccine skepticism in France could, however, confound a public health campaign on immunisation.

Only 59 percent of French people are willing to get vaccinated, according to an opinion poll published in September, compared with 74 percent worldwide.

Prof Larson ( anthropologist and Director of The Vaccine Confidence Project ) argues that anti-vaccine sentiment flourishes when people do not feel a sense of dignity or control over their own lives. The last year has exacerbated such emotions, and they will not disappear when lockdowns end. Restoring confidence in immunisation may, in the long run, require the much more fundamental rethink that many hoped this pandemic might produce: a reappraisal of who and what is valued, and how we should be living and relating to each other. Li Meng Yan

Chinese virologist

Coronavirus developed at government lab in Wuhan, claims Chinese virologist Li-Meng Yan

On September 14, an article was posted to Zenodo, an open-access site for sharing research papers, which claimed that genetic evidence showed that the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus was made in a lab, rather than emerging through natural spillover from animals. The 26-page paper, led by Chinese virologist Li-Meng Yan, a postdoctoral researcher who left Hong Kong University, has not undergone peer review and asserts that this evidence of genetic engineering has been “censored” in the scientific journals.

Yan’s controversial claims about the infectious virus, which emerged via two non-peer reviewed papers, have been firmly rejected by wider scientific community but still found an audience among social media users and fringe conspiracy websites.

Candidate vaccines

There are more than one hundred vaccines in preclinical development by pharmaceutical companies, academic institutions, government agencies, and others. More than seventy of these are being tracked by the WHealthO. Tens of vaccine candidates, across more than a dozen countries, are already undergoing clinical trials. One of these has been approved for limited use by the Chinese military. While several of these candidates are already spurring hope, experts warn that it’s too early to determine which, if any, will be successful on a large scale.
