Javier Milei wins Argentina’s presidency

MB + Giorgio de Chirico

Javier Milei, a volatile far-right libertarian who has vowed to “exterminate” inflation and take a chainsaw to the state, has been elected president of Argentina, catapulting South America’s second largest economy into an unpredictable and potentially turbulent future.

With more than 99% of votes counted, the Mick Jagger impersonating TV celebrity-turned politician, who is often compared to Donald Trump, had secured 55.69% of the vote compared to 44.3% for his rival, the centre-left finance minister Sergio Massa.

“Today the reconstruction of Argentina begins. Today is a historic night for Argentina,” Milei told jubilant supporters at his campaign headquarters in Buenos Aires, calling his victory a “miracle”.

Milei promised “drastic changes” to tackle Argentina’s “tragic reality” of soaring inflation and widespread poverty. He also sent a message to the international community: “Argentina will return to the place in the world which it should never have lost.”

“Argentinians have chosen another path,” said Massa, who said he had called Milei to congratulate him on his victory and would retire from frontline politics.

“Obviously these are not the results we hoped for and I have spoken to Javier Milei to congratulate him because he’s the president that the majority of Argentines have chosen for the next four years,” added Massa, whose Peronist movement has governed for 16 of the last 20 years.

Pro-Milei activists rejoiced at the triumph of their 53-year-old leader, whom they describe as an economic visionary poised to lead Argentina out of one of the country’s worst economic crises in decades.

“[I’m] happy, happy, happy,” said Francisco Jiménez, a 30-year-old delivery driver and Milei activist from Villa Soldati, a working-class area outside Buenos Aires.

Macron isolated and unpopular

Izïa Higelin imagines Emmanuel Macron’s lynching during a concert

Isolated at home and alienating allies abroad, French President Emmanuel is desperate for new ideas to re-launch his second term.

Although he has pushed through his cherished pension reform after three months of protests and strikes, the move has sapped his image and turned his often-simmering country into a hotbed of anger.

Fifty-nine percent of people thought it was wrong to want to move on from the issue of pensions,

His overall popularity ratings are hovering at near record lows, with around one in four voters having a positive view of him — similar to the level of late 2018 when a violent revolt against his policies by “Yellow Vest” protesters began.

“We’re very unpopular. The president is very, very unpopular. There’s a lot of animosity towards him,” a ruling party MP told AFP recently on condition of anonymity. “I think we’re going to remain in a profoundly unstable state until 2027.”

The problem for the head of state as he seeks to bounce back is that his margin for manoeuvre is limited.

He lost his parliamentary majority in elections last June and his own campaign for a second term was widely described as lacklustre.

“Given the manifesto we had in 2022, there aren’t many things to develop,” a former ruling party MP lamented to AFP. “Pensions were pretty much the only thing we sold to people.”

Abroad too, Macron has made few new friends since becoming the first French president in 20 years to win a second term in April last year.

Already famed for his provocative statements, he revived the habit on April 8 as he returned from a trip to China where he spent hours in talks with Chinese leader Xi Jinping.

Europe should not be a “follower” of the United States, Macron said, adding that the EU should not get caught up in “crises that aren’t ours”, referring to the possibility of a conflict between China and the United States over Taiwan.

Distancing himself from Washington at a time when the United States is delivering the bulk of military aid to Ukraine caused instant unease across Europe, particularly in Baltic and eastern European states such as Poland.

Pitching the idea of an independent Europe “when the US is basically saving your skin was always going to backfire”, Joseph de Weck, an author of a biography of Macron, told AFP.

“Macron is good on strategy and long-term thinking. He’s often terrible on tactics and communications,” he added.

“Reviving the confidence of the French people looks very unlikely. We’ll have a lot of stagnation in politics the next few years

Gustavo Petro

Colombian President-elect Gustavo Petro

Now that the celebrations are over, Colombia’s new left-wing president faces a mountain of challenges. His biggest challenge will be delivering on his promises.

Petro’s Historic Pact coalition of left-wing political parties holds 25 seats in the 188-seat lower house of Congress, and just 16 in the 108-seat Senate. To have a chance of pushing through some of his agenda items, Petro will have to court the lawmakers of centrist and center-right parties such as the Liberal Party, Radical Change, and the U Party

That’s a tall order given that these establishment parties are unlikely to back some of Petro’s more radical policy objectives, like banning all new mining and oil exploration activity, and raising taxes on the 4,000 wealthiest Colombians.

Petro is not unaware that congressional gridlock threatens to derail his agenda. The president-elect said he would declare an “economic emergency” that would allow him to bypass Congress and govern by decree. He told the local radio station Blu Radio in March that widespread hunger and poverty in Colombia constitutes a “social catastrophe,” and this justifies the use of greater executive powers

Gustavo Petro Will Have a Hard Time Getting Things Done

French lawmakers elect Yaël Braun-Pivet as National Assembly president, first woman in role

The French National Assembly has elected Yaël Braun-Pivet as its president, equivalent to a Speaker of the House, in the opening session of its 16th Legislature. Braun-Pivet, a 51-year-old member of Emmanuel Macron’s Renaissance party, will be the first woman ever to hold the position in France, a mark of progress despite waning parity in the lower-house chamber.

Who is Ferdinand Marcos Jr., Philippines’ next president ?

Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr., who is set to become the president of the Philippines after winning the elections, comes to the job with a controversial family history.

He’s the son of a dictator who was embroiled in corruption and human rights violations, and was ousted after two decades in power in the Southeast Asian nation. His family’s popularity saw a recent resurgence largely driven by social media.

Marcos Jr., 64, is the only son of Ferdinand Marcos, who ruled over the Philippines from 1965 to 1986. “My father sort of wanted me to enter politics,” the younger Marcos said in an interview in 2017. “He sort of forced me and pushed in that way.”

Marcos Jr. teamed up with outgoing president Rodrigo Duterte’s daughter Sara, who has won the vice presidency, aiming to benefit from her father’s continued popularity.

In the Senate, Marcos helped pass bills mostly pertaining to local governments. Marcos has promised “unifying leadership” and to prioritize pandemic recovery and the economy. He also has pledged to aid the farm sector, de-congest the capital Manila’s roads, push and continue fighting a long-running communist insurgency.

Meanwhile, there is concern that public efforts to hold the Marcoses accountable and to recover ill-gotten wealth will stop if Marcos wins.

While the Philippines has been a staunch ally of the U.S. in the Pacific, ties became strained under Duterte, as he repeatedly threatened to end a key military deal with the U.S., before deciding in 2021 to keep it.

Marcos Jr. meanwhile has committed to maintaining the nation’s alliance with the superpower. He told a virtual forum earlier this year that the alliance is “a special relationship,” and the U.S. “can do many things” to help the Philippines.”

At the same time, Marcos has said he plans to negotiate a deal with China to resolve a longstanding territorial dispute in the South China Sea. His stance is similar to that of Duterte, who courted Beijing, while tapping Chinese funding for infrastructure projects.

While he has also talked about improving ties with Russia, Marcos, who previously declined to take a stance on its war in Ukraine, said in a subsequent statement that Russia should “respect Ukraine’s freedom.”

In Peru, a tense wait for final election results

The leading candidate, Pedro Castillo, has had a narrow lead of about 44,000 votes. The runner-up, Keiko Fujimori, is claiming fraud. She’s seeking to have tens of thousands of votes thrown out. Adding to the tension, allegations of harassment by Fujimori’s supporters directed towards electoral authorities and even journalists covering the events.
